What is the problem with Interstate 55?
As traffic has increased on I-55, cross median crashes have increased. Installation of median guard cable will prevent most out of control vehicles from crossing into oncoming traffic.
What Improvements Along I-55 Are Being Proposed?
Citizens for Safe Medians donated $55,000 to MoDOT specifically for guard cable work where they held various fund-raisers to raise the money. MoDOT accepted the donation and committed to use the money on the next I-55 guard cable project.
MoDOT and its contractor will install guard cable in the median of I-55 in all the remaining gap areas along the interstate between Route M and Route 67. Construction will begin in November 2007 and is expected to be complete by May 2008.
How Will Traffic Be Impacted While Construction Is Under Way?
Workers and equipment will be primarily located in the median, so minimal traffic impacts are expected, however shoulder closures may occur to help protect the workers. Temporary lane closures will be required while equipment and material is moved in and out of the median. Most closures will occur during off-peak hours.
Estimated Project Cost:
Approximately $779,000 is budgeted for construction of this project with D&S Fencing Company as the contractor.
