This year, the Missouri Department of Transportation has several projects planned along the I-44 corridor in St. Louis County and St. Louis City. This is part of planned rehabilitation projects for aging bridges along the I-44 corridor.  There are a number of bridges scheduled for work in 2018, and work along the I-44 corridor will continue through 2020.  Here's what you can expect this year:

I-44 bridge and pavement rehabilitation – This project removes and replaces the driving surface from Murdoch to the River Des Peres and replaces the eastbound bridge over the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad. During construction the ramp from Shrewsbury to eastbound I-44 will be closed in early spring 2018.  Drivers will have shifted lanes – three eastbound and two westbound – during the project. The project has begun. The bridge project will be completed in late 2018, while final resurfacing will be complete in late spring 2019.

I-44 bridge improvements– This project improves the bridges between Kingshighway and 39th Street. It includes rehabilitating the Union Pacific Railroad, Vandeventer and Tower Grove bridges and replacing the Kingshighway, Thurman and 39th Street bridges. During this project, crews will also replace the pedestrian bridge over the interstate between the Edwards overpass and Kingshighway. One I-44 lane in both directions will be closed around the clock, and several ramps and cross streets will be impacted during the work.  Currently, plans have the eastbound I-44 ramp to Vandeventer closed from March until December 2018. In addition, the ramp from Vandeventer to westbound I-44 is set to be closed from March until December 2019. Tower Grove under the interstate will be closed for a month in both 2018 and 2019, but the timeframe for that has not yet been determined.  The ramp from Grand to westbound I-44 will be closed for three months in 2019, but the specific dates for that have not been determined. The project starts in early 2018 and will be completed in late 2019 .

Poplar Street Bridge widening

Work continues on the eastbound lanes of the Poplar Street Bridge though 2018.  This year, crews will reopen one lane on the ramp from I-55/I-44 to the eastbound lanes in March, and will reopen one eastbound lane on the bridge at the same time. Crews will work to widen the bridge over the year, and will have one eastbound lane and one westbound lane closed around the clock through December 2018.
