I-44 and Hampton Avenue Project

Why Does Interstate 44 and Hampton Avenue Need Improvements?

Due to the traffic congestion on Hampton Avenue, MoDOT is taking steps to make the Interstate 44 and Hampton interchange function more efficiently. With the current lane configuration, traffic frequently backs up at the interchange causing congestion in several directions. There is also a sight distance restriction for motorists exiting on the westbound Interstate 44 off-ramp.

What Improvements Along Interstate 44 and Hampton Avenue Are Proposed?

MoDOT is adding a dual left turn lane from southbound Hampton Avenue to eastbound Interstate 44. As part of the project, crews will restripe Hampton Avenue and modify the signals. In order to accommodate the new acceleration lane to eastbound Interstate 44, the bridge at Sublette will be widened about eight feet to the south. In addition, the bridge abutment wall on the eastern side of the interchange will be relocated back about 20 feet to improve the sight distance.

How Will Traffic Be Impacted While Construction Is Underway?

While construction is underway, lanes on Hampton Avenue will be closed between 7 p.m. and 4 a.m. daily. Construction began in Spring 2008 and is expected to be complete in Summer 2008.

Estimated Project Cost:

Estimated cost for the Interstate 44 and Hampton Avenue Project is approximately $1.55 million.
