What Is The Problem With The Gravois Road Bridge At Gravois Creek?

The Gravois Road (Route 30) bridge over Gravois Creek (west of Grant Road and east of Musick Road) was built in 1922 and is beginning to show significant signs of deterioration and no longer meets modern standards. The existing bridge only has four lanes, minimal shoulders and no safe pedestrian access. There is also daily congestion at this location due to vehicles making left turns onto Grant Road and McNary from eastbound and westbound Gravois Road.

What Is The Proposed Solution?

  • MoDOT will replace the aging Gravois Road bridge over Gravois Creek.
  • A turn lane will be added to the bridge, which will widen the bridge from four lanes to five lanes. There will be a turn lane from eastbound Gravois Road to Grant Road.
  • A five-foot pedestrian sidewalk will be added to the south side of the bridge.
  • Three-foot shoulders will be added to both sides of the bridge.
  • A left turn lane will also be added from westbound Gravois Road to McNary.

Why Close Gravois Road While Construction Is Under Way?

MoDOT is proposing to close Gravois Road from west of Grant Road to east of Musick Road for approximately two months

  • There will be access to Musick Rd. from eastbound Gravois Road and to McNary/Grant from westbound Gravois Road.
  • By closing the roadway while the bridge is replaced, crews can save approximately four months in construction time, and the work should be able to be completed during Grant’s Farm annual closure (to minimize impact on the attraction).
  • If the bridge were to remain open during construction, there would be several stages and permanent lane restrictions needed to complete construction. Gravois Road would be restricted to one lane in each direction during construction. This would result in increased congestion and significant delays at this location.
  • Safer and more efficient working environment for MoDOT’s employees and contractors.
