The City of St. Louis and Great Rivers Greenway are in the process of updating many city streets based on the Bike St. Louis Phase 3 plan.

Several of the bike routes on the Bike St. Louis Plan are state-owned and maintained.
Some of the improvements to state roadways have been completed during recent resurfacing projects. Many of the improvements include reducing the number of driving lanes to add a bike lane, painting sharrows (which are symbols painted on the pavement indicating that cycles and motor vehicles share the land), adding channelizers or other roadway improvements. All changes made to state roadways involved a traffic study to see what the traffic levels were and if the roadway could support bike lanes or "sharrows." All changes on state roadways are coordinated with Great Rivers Greenway, the city streets department and the alderman for the ward or wards affected.
So far, the following state roadways have had completed bike improvements:
- Portions of Chouteau/Manchester (Route 100)
- Chippewa (Route 366)
- Gravois (Route 30)
