MoDOT constructed the Interstate 70 and Mid Rivers Mall Drive interchange as a diverging diamond interchange (DDI). This project is a cost share with the city of St. Peters and St. Charles County.
Some of the advantages of a diverging diamond interchange include free turns for motorists, meaning vehicles don’t cross opposing traffic. Traffic models indicate this type of interchange works well with areas of heavy traffic, such as Mid Rivers Mall Drive.
MoDOT has built numerous diverging diamond interchanges in Missouri, including the first DDI in the St. Louis region at the Interstate 270 and Dorsett interchange in the city of Maryland Heights.
This project also includes the construction of an added lane on westbound I-70 between Mid Rivers Mall Drive and Route 79.
