Elm Street on the SOUTH side of U.S. 60/Route 413 in Republic may be closed during the week of August 23, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.
However, the street will not be closed until Mill and Maple streets are reopened to traffic. Both Mill and Maple streets are closed to allow crews to pave the approaches to the highway.
Elm Street on the NORTH side of U.S. 60/Route 413 remains closed for reconstruction until late August. Crews are relocating utility lines, installing new drain pipes and widening the intersection.
Lee and Harrison streets on the SOUTH side of the highway have been re-opened to traffic following reconstruction of those approaches.
On Monday, August 23, crews plan to tear out the old shoulder on the SOUTH side of the U.S. 60/Route 413 between Illinois Avenue and the west city limits. At mid-week crews will lay asphalt to rebuild the shoulder.
Other work planned will take place AWAY from traffic. Crews will build new curbs and gutters, rebuild entrances and pour concrete to widen the road on the SOUTH side of the highway between Elm Street and Route P (Main Avenue). On the NORTH side of the highway, crews will build curb and sidewalks.
Rain will cause delays in the project.
No night work is scheduled for the week of August 23.
Week of August 30
Elm Street on the NORTH and SOUTH side of the highway will remain closed. The approaches to the highway will be rebuilt.
Other work planned will take place AWAY from traffic. Crews will build curb and gutter and widen the highway on the SOUTH side of U.S. 60/Route 413 toward West Avenue. Work will continue on curb and sidewalks at various locations on the NORTH side of the highway.
No night work is scheduled for the week August 30.
Drivers can expect bumps to remain at some city street approaches that have been rebuilt until they can be repaved next spring.
Giving Advance Warning
MoDOT and its contractors will continue to work closely with city officials and businesses and others directly affected when planning the street closings.
Emergency service agencies and dispatchers are being notified when streets are closed so that responders can plan alternate routes, he said.
Background
The prime contractor on the $6.1-million widening project along U.S.60/Route 413 in Republic is Journagan Construction of Springfield. Some sewer and water line work is being done by the City of Republic, a partner with MoDOT on the project.
The project involves adding a lane in each direction and rebuilding city street approaches and driveway entrances between Hines Street and West Avenue, with work continuing into the fall. The highway will be resurfaced through Republic's city limits in the spring of 2005 after the weather warms up.
