Be Prepared for Side-Street Closings and Work
On Both Sides of U.S. 60/Route 413 in Republic

DISTRICT 8, SPRINGFIELD - Most work on the widening project along U.S. 60/Route 413 in Republic the week after the Fourth of July holiday will take place AWAY from traffic, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

Existing curbs will be removed and a sewer line relocated along the SOUTH side of the highway.

New curbs, driveway approaches and sidewalks will be built on the NORTH side of the highway.

The West Avenue approach to the highway is scheduled to be closed on the NORTH side of the highway for about two weeks starting Tuesday, July 6.

No night work is scheduled for the week following the holiday.

Logan Street is closed on the SOUTH side of the highway. Also closed is the Hampton Avenue approach on the NORTH side of the highway.

Harrison Street is open near the Post Office entrance on the SOUTH side of the highway, although drivers must slow down to drive on rock until the approach is paved later this construction season.

A bump will remain at the Main Avenue approach to the highway until paving work is completed.

The week of July 12, Hines Street on the NORTH side of the highway is scheduled to be closed for two to three weeks. Crews will excavate to rebuild the approach, put in new water drainage structures and install new traffic signal posts.

Elsewhere the week of July 12, excavation and approach reconstruction work will continue on both sides of the highway, with most activity AWAY from traffic.

When workers are present on the job, the U.S. 60/Route 413 speed limit is reduced to 35 mph.

Drivers are urged to slow down through the work zone and watch for cars turning slowly into driveways that may be half closed.

The prime contractor on the $6.1-million widening project is Journagan Construction of Springfield. Some sewer and water line work is being done by the City of Republic, a partner with MoDOT on the project.

The project involves adding a lane in each direction and rebuilding city street approaches and driveway entrances between Hines Street and West Avenue, with work continuing into the fall. The road will be resurfaced through its entire stretch within the city limits in the spring of 2005 after the weather warms up.
