DISTRICT 8, SPRINGFIELD - Lane closings between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. the week of July 19 are possible on westbound Sunshine Street on the east side of Glenstone Avenue as part of the ongoing intersection widening project in southeast Springfield.
The Missouri Department of Transportation said contractor crews plan to begin removing curb to prepare for widening the pavement on the north side of Sunshine.
The lane closings, expected each day in the coming week, are planned before morning rush hour begins in order to minimize driving disruptions. Traffic is light during those pre-dawn hours.
No through lanes on either street will be closed during daytime hours.
Here's a look at what else is happening on the project, with most work taking place AWAY from traffic:
* The right-turn lanes on the northwest, southwest and southeast corners are closed. Drivers will have to make right turns at the intersection. Crews are rebuilding the turn lanes.
* New curbs will be built along along southbound Glenstone Avenue north of Sunshine Street and along westbound Sunshine Street west of Glenstone Avenue.
* A City Utilities contractor will continue relocating a water line on the northeast corner, while another utility crew relocates fiber optic cable in the islands on the south side of the intersection.
MoDOT and the City of Springfield are working together on a series of intersection widening projects along Glenstone Avenue and Kansas Expressway. They include the Sunshine/Glenstone widening where left-turn lanes are being added, right-turn lanes realigned and new traffic signals and street lighting installed.
