Republic: Hines Street on the South Side
Of Route 60/413 Scheduled to be Closed

*DISTRICT 8, SPRINGFIELD - Hines Street on the SOUTH side of U.S. 60/Route 413 will be closed to traffic Tuesday or Wednesday, September 7 or 8, for reconstruction, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

The intersection will be widened, with crews relocating utility lines and installing new drain pipes and traffic signals. The street closing is expected to take two to three weeks.

No work is scheduled on the project over the Labor Day holiday weekend. However, several streets will be closed to traffic at the highway and orange barrels and cones will be present throughout the project. Drivers are urged to use caution and obey posted speed limits.

Starting Tuesday, September 7

Elm Street on the SOUTH side of U.S. 60/Route 413 may be opened to traffic late in the week after work resumes Tuesday, September 7. Crews are widening the intersection and installing new traffic signals.

Elm Street on the NORTH side of the highway was reopened to traffic on Wednesday, September 1.

Morningside and Hampton avenues are scheduled to be opened to traffic by mid-week after crews are back on the job September 7. The concrete approaches have been poured and crews are waiting until the concrete has cured properly before opening them to traffic.

Other work planned will take place AWAY from traffic. Crews will pour concrete to widen the highway and will rebuild business approaches on the SOUTH side of the highway. On the NORTH side of the highway, crews will build curb and sidewalks and lay sod.

No night work is scheduled.

The Week of September 13

Hines Street SOUTH of the highway will remain closed for widening. If Elm Street on the SOUTH side was not reopened to traffic the previous week, it will be opened to traffic early in the week of September 13.

Crews will lay asphalt to widen the eastbound lanes of U.S. 60/Route 413 between Elm Street and West Avenue. During the work, eastbound traffic will be shifted into the center-turn lane.

Work will continue on building sidewalk and curb, laying sod and applying grass seed and mulch in various locations AWAY from traffic.

Rain will cause delays in the project.

No night work is scheduled the week of September 13.

Drivers can expect bumps to remain at some city street approaches that have been rebuilt until they can be repaved next spring.

Drivers are urged to slow down through the work zone and watch for cars turning slowly into driveways that may be half closed.

Giving Advance Warning

MoDOT and its contractors will continue to work closely with city officials and businesses and others directly affected when planning the street closings.

Emergency service agencies and dispatchers are being notified when streets are closed so that responders can plan alternate routes, he said.

Background

The prime contractor on the $6.1-million widening project along U.S.60/Route 413 in Republic is Journagan Construction of Springfield. Some sewer and water line work is being done by the City of Republic, a partner with MoDOT on the project.

The project involves adding a lane in each direction and rebuilding city street approaches and driveway entrances between Hines Street and West Avenue, with work continuing into the fall. The highway will be resurfaced through Republic's city limits in the spring of 2005 after the weather warms up.
