Route 65 Six-Laning Project - Springfield
Update for Week of August 29, 2016
  • Nighttime lane closings possible on southbound Route 65 south of Route 60 

Work Scheduled:  

  • Paving in Route 65 median between Route 60 and Evans Road
  • Installing storm drain structures in Route 65 median south of Springfield Lake
  • Pouring concrete for overhead truss sign in Route 65 median near Evans Road
  • Building bridge columns in median area below Route 65 at Springfield Lake 

Traffic Impacts:  

  • One southbound lane of Route 65 closed at night at times. Work hours: 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
  • TRAFFIC SHIFT: Southbound Route 65 lanes narrowed and shifted to right or west on bridge over Springfield Lake 
  • TRAFFIC CONGESTION EXPECTED during afternoon rush hours for southbound Route 65 and for eastbound Route 60 drivers exiting to go southbound on Route 65
    • Timbercrest Road underneath Route 65, the Galloway Greenways trail and the James River Water trail CLOSED until fall 2017
    • Drivers urged to use alternate routes to get around the Timbercrest Road closing
    • Trail users are urged to use other Greenways Trails in the area
  • Crews and equipment entering and leaving the Route 65 median in areas
  • Southbound Route 65 speed limit reduced in work zone 

(Weather or construction delays could alter the work schedule.) 

Project Summary:

  • Widen Route 65 to six lanes — three lanes in each direction — between Route 60 and a point south of Evans Road to continue the progress to six lane Route 65 toward Ozark
  • Widen and rehabilitate southbound Route 65 bridge over Lake Springfield to accommodate new lanes and to lengthen eastbound Route 60-to-southbound Route 65 ramp
  • Replace northbound Route 65 bridge over Lake Springfield with new, wider span to replace old bridge in constant need of repair
  • Extend northbound Route 65 ramps to Route 60 

Prime Contractor: Emery Sapp and Sons, Columbia

Completion Date: November 2017

Total Project Cost: $21 million.
