Interchange Construction Begins Jan. 30
At U.S. 71 & Route TT North of Nevada
Vernon County -- Work begins the week of Jan. 30 on construction of a new interchange on Route 71 at Vernon County Route TT between Horton and Rich Hill north of Nevada, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.
This is part of the upgrading of U.S. 71 to Interstate 49 between Kansas City and Pineville that has been ongoing for several years. MoDOT is working toward I-49 designation by the end of 2012.
During the week of Jan. 30, contractor crews will begin installing work zone signs and placing concrete barriers along the outside shoulders of northbound and southbound U.S. 71.
The project involves building a bridge over U.S. 71 and building ramps connecting U.S. 71 to Route TT.
Workers will begin hauling rock and dirt to areas along the outside shoulders on either side of U.S. 71 in the area of Route TT to build up areas for a new bridge.
The prime contractor is APAC-Hilty of Clinton, doing the work for a low bid amount of $6.4 million.
Completion is scheduled for early December 2012.
Much of the work at U.S. 71 and Route TT over the next several weeks will take place AWAY from traffic.
However, sometime during the summer, it will be necessary to CLOSE Route TT for several months to connect the road into the new interchange. The exact closing date of Route TT will be announced later.
Nearby Bridge Project
At the same time the interchange project is taking place at Route TT, contractor crews will replace the southbound U.S. 71 bridge over the railroad tracks very close to Route TT. The new railroad bridge will be built as part of MoDOT's Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program.
During the railroad bridge project, to begin later in the year, U.S. 71 traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction and routed into the northbound lanes.
The interchange construction at Route TT is in the final group of U.S. 71 projects needed before the highway can be designated as I-49.
An interchange and two overpasses will be built this year in Cass County and one more outer road project will be built in Bates County near Rich Hill to complete the conversion.
