Eastbound I-44 Bridge Rehabilitation

Project Facts:

  • Rehabilitate the eastbound I-44 bridge over the Spring River at mile marker 43.4 (west of Mt. Vernon)
  • Built in 1964, bridge is experiencing significant deterioration
  • Currently, nearly 30,000 vehicles per day cross the bridge

Construction: February 2017 to late fall 2017

Estimated total project cost: $3.4 million

Traffic Impacts:

  • Drivers should expect lane closings in the westbound lanes beginning week of Feb. 6
  • Beginning week of March 13, temporary crossovers will be completed moving two-way traffic into the westbound lanes of I-44
  • Eastbound bridge will CLOSE no sooner than March 15 for the duration of the project
  • Motorists can expect significant traffic delays and a reduced speed limit of 60 mph through the work zone
  • Divers are urged to seek alternate routes around the construction
  • Some work may occur on weekends
