Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long is the detour?
A: MoDOT cannot officially detour traffic onto roads that are not maintained by the state. Using state routes, the shortest detour length is under 23 miles.
Q: Can we avoid having the bridge closed during the school year since three school buses use that route?
A: We plan to do the work during the summer when school is not in session.
Q: Can half the bridge be built at a time to avoid closing the bridge altogether?
A: The expense and time it would take would be prohibitive. It would take the contractor twice as long, and he'd have to deal with the traffic if he did it that way. The job would be more complicated since the contractor could only remove a certain amount of the bridge deck before having to put some back to balance the weight of the remaining half of the roadway. If the bridge is completely closed, the contractor can complete the work more quickly and efficiently, making for a more cost-effective project.
Q: Could the contractor work around the clock to complete the job faster?
A: We could shorten the time the job needs to be complete, but this would be reflected in the contractors' bids because they would run a greater risk of not being able to finish on time. MoDOT is committed to making its dollars go as far as they can to complete as much work as possible. If we make demands like this that cost more money, it means less money to spend on other roads.
Q: Could MoDOT upgrade the county road so traffic could use it?
A: MoDOT can only spend money on the state road system.
