Commission Rejects Contract for Improvements to Route W in Cape Girardeau County

SIKESTON - The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission rejected a contract during its regular meeting today for improvements Route W in Cape Girardeau County.

Two bids were received for the project, and both were higher than anticipated.  The bids surpassed MoDOT's budget for the project and were therefore rejected.

Bids for the project are expected to reopen this September.

When awarded, improvements will extend from Lexington Ave. to the new LaSalle Ave.  The project includes resurfacing, shoulder improvements, adding centerline and edge line rumble strips, improving the intersections at County Road 620 and Perryville Road, and improving drainage structures.

To improve drainage structures, the box culvert located three-tenths a mile south of County Road 618, will be replaced. Also, the box culvert located near the County Road 620 intersection on Cape Lacroix Creek, will be extended. Extending this culvert will allow the roadway to be widened.

As the culvert near County Road 618 is being replaced, it will be necessary to close the road for approximately two weeks. As work is performed to extend the culvert near County Road 620, the road will be closed for approximately two weeks. However, the closures will not occur at the same time.

Once the project is re-let and awarded, work is anticipated to begin in the spring with completion in winter 2010.
