Commission Awards Safe and Sound Bridge Improvements in Bollinger and New Madrid Counties

SIKESTON - The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded a contract during its regular meeting today for improvements to four bridges in the Southeast District.  Bridges to be improved include: Route B Little Muddy Creek Bridge in Bollinger County and Route W Little River Ditch Bridge, Route EE Little River Ditch #294 Bridge and Route W Drainage Ditch #45 Bridge in New Madrid County.  The $1,120,978 contract was awarded to Penzel Construction Company Inc., Jackson, Mo.

These bridge replacements are part of MoDOT's Safe and Sound Program.  There are 86 bridges in the Southeast District that are currently in the "Safe and Sound" program, and these are among the first 19 bridges to receive improvements.

These bridges will be identified throughout Southeast Missouri with the "Safe and Sound" logo signs near the bridges. The "Safe and Sound" signs identify these bridges as being some of Southeast District's poorest condition bridges-but these bridges will be repaired or replaced within the next five years.  In September, the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission approved plans to improve more than 800 of the state's lowest rated bridges within the next five years.

Work on these newly awarded bridges could begin as early as this June.  To do this, each bridge will be closed for up to six weeks during the work-it's quicker and more cost-efficient to do it all at once.  Motorists may need to plan alternate routes when each bridge is under construction.

Work zones will be marked with signs as the improvements are being made.  Detour routes will be marked as work on the two Route W bridges in New Madrid County takes place.  Drivers are urged to use extreme caution near the work zones and plan for possible delays.  MoDOT will alert drivers prior to any change in traffic.
