Community Briefing Scheduled in New Madrid County
‘Safe and Sound’ Signs Used to Identify Upcoming Bridge Replacements

SIKESTON- To help the public understand more about upcoming "Safe and Sound" bridge projects in their areas, MoDOT will be conducting open-house community briefings.  The next community briefing will be held March 24 to discuss the Route W Drainage Ditch #45, Route EE Little River Ditch #29 and Route W Little River Ditch bridge replacements in New Madrid County.  The meeting will be held at MoDOT's Kewanee Maintenance Shed, located on Route W, from 4 to 6 p.m.  MoDOT staff will be on-hand to discuss details about the project plans and available alternate routes.

Other similar community briefings will be planned and announced for the remaining bridges in Southeast Missouri as the planned construction at each location approaches.  There are 86 bridges in the Southeast District that are currently in "Safe and Sound" program.  These bridges will be identified throughout Southeast Missouri with the "Safe and Sound" logo signs near the bridges. These "Safe and Sound" signs identify these bridges as being some of Southeast District's poorest condition bridges-but these bridges will be repaired or replaced within the next five years.  In September, the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission approved plans to improve more than 800 of the state's lowest rated bridges within the next five years.

There are 19 bridges in the Southeast District that will be among some of the first bridges to receive improvements.  These bridges are currently planned for construction in 2009 and 2010.  To do this, each bridge will be closed for up to six weeks during the work-it's quicker and more cost-efficient to do it all at once.  Motorists may need to plan alternate routes when each bridge is under construction.

For more information or a complete listing of bridges included in the program, please call Project Manager Andy Meyer at 573-472-5296, 1-888-ASK-MoDOT (275-6636), or log onto http://www.modot.org/ and click on the "Safe and Sound" logo.
