I-55 Improvements Among the First Economic Recovery Projects to Begin in the Nation
SIKESTON - The Missouri Department of Transportation held a press conference today following President Barack Obama's signing of the Economic Recovery Act to discuss its effects on upcoming MoDOT projects and what these projects could mean for the economy.
The press conference was held at Southeast Missouri Stone Company, 1224 South Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau, Mo., where pre-construction for the Interstate 55 project in Pemiscot and New Madrid Counties was underway. The Southeast Missouri Stone Company will be producing rock for the project.
Work on the I-55 project, which is one of the first Economic Recovery projects to be under construction in the nation, began immediately upon the president's signing of the act. The project includes improvements to I-55 in Pemiscot and New Madrid Counties that will occur at locations of greatest need between Route 60 at Sikeston and the Arkansas state line-almost 24 miles of resurfacing in the northbound lanes and nearly 30 miles of resurfacing in the southbound lanes. Also, work will occur on the ramps of nine interchanges in the area.
"Missouri will receive more than $640 million to address road, bridge, air, rail, transit, waterway and pedestrian projects throughout the state," said District Engineer Mark Shelton. "That amount of work will create an estimated 14,000 jobs and have a $2.4 billion impact on the state's economy."
Two other "ready-to-go" roadway improvement projects are also within Southeast Missouri. Projects include improvements to:
· Interstate 55 in Pemiscot (major resurfacing from the Arkansas state line to Hayti in the northbound lanes)
· Route 34 in Wayne County (widening, resurfacing and some realignment from Piedmont to Route 67)
