Commission Awards Safe and Sound Bridge Improvements in St. Francois County

SIKESTON - The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded a contract during its regular meeting yesterday for improvements to the St. Francis River Bridge and Big River Bridge on Route 67, Route O Koen Creek Bridge, and Route F Wolf Creek Bridge.  The $2,390,969 contract was awarded to Joe's Bridge & Grading, Inc., Poplar Bluff, Mo.

These bridge replacements are part of MoDOT's Safe and Sound Program.  There are 86 bridges in the Southeast District that are currently in the "Safe and Sound" program, and these are among the first 19 bridges to receive improvements.

These bridges will be identified throughout Southeast Missouri with the "Safe and Sound" logo signs near the bridges. These "Safe and Sound" signs identify these bridges as being some of Southeast District's poorest condition bridges-but these bridges will be repaired or replaced within the next five years.  In September, the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission approved plans to improve more than 800 of the state's lowest rated bridges within the next five years.

Work on these newly awarded bridges is expected to begin this spring. Like most bridges included in the Safe and Sound program, Route O Koen Creek and Route F Wolf Creek Bridges will be closed as improvements are being made. Each bridge will be closed for up to six weeks during the work-it's quicker and more cost-efficient to do it all at once.  However, for the other bridge replacements in St. Francois County there is a lack of suitable detour routes.

The bridge projects on Route 67 over the St. Francis River and Big River will not include road closures.  Instead, temporary crossovers will be constructed to allow head to head traffic.

Work zones will be marked with signs as the improvements are being made.   Drivers are urged to use extreme caution near the work zones and plan for possible delays.  MoDOT will alert drivers prior to any change in traffic.
