Willow Springs, Mo. - Work to prepare Route 63, between the communities of West Plains and Thayer, for widening and adding climbing and passing lanes began this week. According to MoDOT Resident Engineer Phill Knott, this project will increase capacity and improve safety thanks to the added lanes.
Plans call for overlaying and partially widening 25.42 miles of Route 63 from Route ZZ, just south of West Plains, Mo., in Howell County, to Route 19 in Thayer, Mo., which lies in Oregon County. The striping configuration for climbing and passing lanes, which will be seen in the widened areas, allows for three lanes of traffic with one lane alternating from one side of the road to the other. On the side of the roadway where two lanes of traffic are moving in one direction, motorists have an opportunity to pass slower moving traffic.
MoDOT crews started work on the Mustion Creek Bridge just south of West Plains this week. They are performing deck repair in preparation for resurfacing.
Crews also will begin deck repair work on the bridge south of the West Plains Motor Speedway on Monday, June 2. During the day, traffic will be reduced to one lane with flaggers present. Minimal delays should be expected. The bridge will be fully open to traffic at night. It is estimated the deck work should be finished in four to six weeks, weather permitting.
Knott said contractor crews still plan to move in the week of June 2. "Excavation work will first take place south of Koshkonong," he said. "Shoulder work ahead signs will be in place to warn motorists of their presence. No lane closures are anticipated. Crews and equipment will be located behind guardrail and off the shoulder of the road. Motorists should be aware dump trucks will be moving through the area as excavated dirt is moved from work locations."
Asphalt paving is set to begin in mid to late summer and, weather permitting, final completion is expected by November. The work was awarded to Chester Bross Construction, Co./CB Equipment, Inc. of Hannibal, Mo., at a total cost of $5,223.778.49. This award comes in more than $2.2 million under the original cost estimate.
