Transportation and Civil Engineering

The Transportation and Civil Engineering program is an exciting educational opportunity for young people sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. This national program is implemented in the State of Missouri by the Missouri Department of Transportation. Currently, MoDOT has approximately 60 volunteers working in 30 schools across the state. In addition to conducting activities throughout the school year, the department hosts the annual TRAC Summer Conference.

TRAC was created by the transportation industry to generate interest in transportation careers among young people. The program is designed to address two related needs within the field: recruiting more of the best students to transportation and engineering, and greater diversity among the workforce.

TRAC was created by experienced educators and is specifically designed to supplement existing physical science, mathematics and socials studies school curriculum.

Working engineers and others in transportation related careers are available to the schools for participation in classroom activities. TRAC volunteers serve as mentors for students interested in transportation and engineering careers. Under the guidance of a schoolteacher and the assistance of TRAC volunteers, students are able to engage themselves in "real world" problem solving related to transportation and civil engineering. TRAC activities employ a hands-on group participation approach, enabling students to be actively involved in learning and to have fun in the process.

What do teachers say?

"Over the past two years, I have been able to use the TRAC program to make my physical science curriculum become more applicable for my students. As the TRAC volunteers explain traffic issues and highway safety to young, soon-to-be drivers, it is evident that the interest level is soaring high. Hands shoot up into the air as students eagerly volunteer. Students scramble to be the first to test the mag-lev cars, and the fastest time clocked brings shouts of achievement. Newton's laws of motion become alive!"
