Dropping Temperatures Could Mean Refreeze on Roadways

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – More winter weather is moving through northwest Missouri this evening with temperatures are expected to plummet overnight. With such extreme conditions, motorists are advised to avoid travel through overnight Saturday if at all possible.

"With wind chills predicted to be at dangerous levels, folks should stay in if they can," explained MoDOT Northwest District Engineer Tony McGaughy. “Anyone who finds themselves in a crash, slide off or disabled vehicle will be exposed to very extreme, dangerous conditions.”

Missouri Department of Transportation crews have been working around the clock to clear roadways. As the sun sets and temperatures begin to fall, however, melting snow and wet roads can refreeze making black ice a concern on roadways, especially on bridges and overpasses. MoDOT reminds motorists to use extra caution when driving even if roads appear to be clear.

To check road conditions including winter weather conditions and traffic speeds, please check MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map at http://traveler.modot.org/map/. The map is also available as a free app for Apple and Android devices.

If you have to travel, please use proper winter safety precautions and make sure you have a full tank of gas, extra blankets and gloves and provisions like medicines, water and snacks.

Please wear your seat belt and don’t drive distracted. If you encounter car troubles or are involved in a crash, please remain in your vehicle.
