School Bus Stop Ahead highway signs are commonly used on roads and highways to help warn drivers that they are approaching a school bus stop location that may not be easily visible. We at MoDOT gladly place and maintain these signs to help promote driver and student safety.
Signs alone will not make a stop safer; they are but one tool in our toolbox to keep students safe. We will work diligently with school districts and local communities to determine the best course to facilitate safer bus stops.
In the past, some signs remained in place long after there was a student being picked up at that location, leading to a loss of credibility for the signs. This could put students and drivers at risk. We are working to change that with a new program to better track these signs.
All requests for new School Bus Stop Ahead signs must come through the school district. If you're a parent or guardian concerned about the safety of your student's bus stop, please contact your school superintendent or transportation coordinator. They will reach out to their contact with MoDOT to request safety enhancements.
MoDOT is working with school districts that pick up students on state routes in the Northwest District to determine which School Bus Stop Ahead signs currently on state highways are still needed and if there are any other sites that need to be evaluated for placement of a School Bus Stop Ahead sign.
School districts across the region have received packets with a form that will help us determine which signs are still in use and where signs may be needed. We ask that you complete and return the form to us by September 30.
If you're visiting this page after September 30, 2015, and have need for a new sign that was not listed on the form you submitted, please contact us at 888-ASK MODOT (888-275-6636) and you will be directed to your local traffic department for assistance.
If you have questions, there are a couple of pages linked below that show which counties are served by the Northwest District, what MoDOT's Engineering Policy Guide states in regards to School Bus Stop Ahead signs, and the Missouri State Statute that refers to School Bus Stop Ahead signs.
Thank you for your assistance. We look forward to working with your community.
