Two Bridges To Be Replaced on Missouri Route 79 in Pike County
Road Will Close During Construction

HANNIBAL – The Buffalo Creek Bridge and Noix Creek Bridge located on Missouri Route 79 in Pike County will be replaced this year. Both bridges are located just south of Louisiana, Missouri, and were originally built in 1935.

“These bridges will be awarded to one contractor, and we anticipate the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission to make that award at its April 5 meeting,” explained MoDOT Area Engineer Brian Haeffner, P.E.  Construction is expected to begin this summer. The Noix Creek Bridge will be completed and open to traffic by October 1, 2017 and the Buffalo Creek Bridge will be complete by November 1, 2017.

A public informational meeting will be held in mid-May concerning the bridges.  “We will discuss the selected contractor for the project, the anticipated closure dates on Route 79 and how these closures will impact traffic at the public meeting,” said Haeffner.

MoDOT will also be giving the contractor three bridge closure options. The first option will be for both bridges to close independently, where only one bridge location will be closed at a time with available detours. The second option is for both bridges to be constructed and closed at the same time with an available detour.  The third option is for the bridge closures to be staggered.  The staggered option will allow the contractor to start construction on one bridge and then move to a point where both bridges are under construction at the same time.  The third option allows a medium between option one and two.  “We are allowing quite a bit of flexibility for the contractor so that we get good bids and minimize the amount of time the roadway is closed during construction,” Haeffner explained.  The closure time for each bridge will be limited to 80 days.

MoDOT’s Historic Preservation Section is now accepting proposals for the relocation and reuse of both of these historic bridges or their components, and more information can be found at http://www.modot.org/freebridges/.  The dates of the closure will not be known until later this spring, and MoDOT will keep area drivers informed through local media.  Those interested can also subscribe to the email and text notification system at https://www6.modot.mo.gov/eMoDOTWeb/jsp/signon/signon.jsp
