New Signs Part of Doing Business Along Missouri Roads

HANNIBAL – Each year, Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) employees inspect signs along Missouri roads that provide direction, laws, recreation, towns, among many others, to keep drivers safe and on the right path to their destinations.  “We have 17 counties in northeast Missouri, and we inspect signs in half the counties one  year, and the other half the next year,” explained Traffic Operations Engineer Rob Frese.  This year, 40,618 signs in Adair, Clark, Knox, Lincoln, Montgomery, Schuyler, Scotland and Warren Counties were inspected and, of those signs, 2,849 of them were marked insufficient, and will be replaced.

There are several criteria inspectors look for to make sure the signs are functioning properly, and inspections are done overnight to ensure signs are visible at night.  “The signs marked insufficient could have been damaged, stolen, old and non-reflective, faded, knocked down, or had trees and brush covering them,” Frese said.  Frese went on to say that every year the MoDOT Northeast District spends about $1.325 million on signage costs which include the purchasing, locating, equipment for installment, and labor.

Damaging or stealing a state sign is against the law, Frese added, and those responsible are liable for damages.

Travelers can look forward to seeing these new signs being installed this winter.   To report a damaged sign, Missourians are encouraged to call MoDOT’s customer service number at 1-888-275-6636.
