Safer Intersection at Atlanta Ready to Use Later This Week

MACON - Drivers utilizing the intersection at U.S. 63 and Route M at Atlanta will have the "j-turn" experience before the end of the week, if all goes as planned.  Message boards in the area will alert drivers when the intersection opens.  However, this area will still be a work zone with potential lane closures as the contractor removes the former median crossover and performs clean up.

J-turns intersections offer drivers a safer way to cross over four lanes of traffic, when compared to a regular median crossover.  "This design is being used throughout the country, and Missouri has built several of them over the last several years because of the safety record after installation," said MoDOT Area Engineer Brian Haeffner.  "J-turns are safer because is there is a significant reduction of conflict points when compared with other intersections," he added.

J-turns require a driver to turn right onto a four-lane highway, merge into the farthest left lane, then perform something similar to a u-turn into the passing lane of the other side of the four-lane highway.  "It's really easy to navigate, yet there is some apprehension for drivers who have never used a j-turn," Haeffner said.  This type of intersection design is frequent along U.S. 63, with j-turn intersections located near Columbia, Ashland, and the Lake of the Ozarks. "For those drivers who utilize the intersection at Atlanta, MoDOT encourages them to view the j-turn video found on its web site at http://www.modot.org/InterchangesandIntersections.htm#Jturn.  Another good online information resource is located at http://www.modot.org/central/major_projects/JTurns.htm.

With winter weather eminent, Haeffner encourages all drivers to sign up for MoDOT's e-update alert system.  "If you want to be notified of upcoming road work, severe weather that is significantly affecting road conditions, and road closures in your area, the fastest way for us to get you this information is via email or text," he said.  The e-update subscription service is free and found online at https://www6.modot.mo.gov/eMoDOTWeb/jsp/signon/signon.jsp.  To get assistant, or for more information, call MoDOT customer service at 1-888-275-6636.
