Safety Improvements to Begin Near Atlanta in Macon County

MACON - Weather permitting, Monday, September 29, work will begin on U.S. Route 63 near Atlanta in Macon County to improve safety at the intersection of U.S. 63 and Macon County Route M.  The project includes constructing acceleration and deceleration lanes and adding J-turns, an innovative design proven to reduce right-angle crashes at intersections. "Since the four-lane opened in 2006, all of the fatal and disabling crashes at this intersection were the result of right-angle crashes," said Brian Haeffner, MoDOT area engineer.

W.L. Miller of Hamilton, Illinois, was awarded the contract in the amount of $650,088.51. The contractor has 60 calendar days to complete the project.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane on U.S. 63 in the work zones between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Drivers are asked to use extreme caution when traveling through this area and obey all construction signs and personnel.

"This safety improvement will benefit all 6,300 drivers who encounter this intersection each day," said Haeffner.

A University of Missouri-Columbia study of five intersections in Missouri where J-turns have been installed shows the alternative solutions to traditional intersections reduced fatal crashes by 100 percent and cut injury crashes in half. In addition, the study found that the number of crashes resulting in disabling injuries dropped by 86 percent, while the number of all crashes at the J-turn intersections declined by 35 percent.
