MACON - Monday, April 28, MoDOT and its contractor plan to begin diamond grinding the existing concrete pavement surface and replace shoulders on various sections of US 61 in Pike and Ralls Counties. Crews will begin in the southbound lanes near New London from April 27 through May 24, and will proceed to the northbound lanes May 26 through June 14.
Diamond grinding is the removal of a thin layer of concrete, generally about ¼ inch from the surface of the pavement. As a preventative maintenance to take care of our existing system, diamond grinding will eliminate minor surface imperfections and bumps to restore a smooth-riding surface, and also minimizes the impact to joints from traffic.
Traffic will be handled on the existing pavement, but will be restricted to one lane with a 55 mph work zone speed limit. The public is urged to use caution during construction. Diamond grinding is also scheduled for US 54 in Audrain and Pike Counties in June. The project was awarded to Interstate Improvements, Inc. of Faribault, Minnesota for $936,771.15.
