HANNIBAL - Weather permitting, beginning Monday, March 24 at 10 a.m., Route A west of New London will be closed to traffic up to 38 working days for bridge rehabilitation at the Turkey Creek Bridge, which is located just east of US 61 between Doe Run Road and Brookside Trail in Ralls County.Road closure signs will be in place notifying motorists of the work. Alternate routes of travel should be taken over US 61, MO 19, Route H and A. Some areas of the road will remain open to residential traffic only; all other traffic must take alternate routes during this time. L. F. Krupp Construction, Inc. of Ellisville, MO was the successful bidder on this project at $224,899.60.Replacing the deck on the 59-year-old bridge requires removal of the deck and side barriers all the way down to steel, then cleaning and replacing some of the steel, and pouring concrete for the new deck which will be 22 foot wide compared to the existing 20 foot deck. "Once the concrete is poured, it must cure, which is the most critical period during the work, when concrete reaches its maximum strength and durability," explains Brian Haeffner, area engineer for MoDOT's Northeast District. "The deck on the Ely Creek Bridge, also on Route A, will be replaced beginning in May," Haeffner added. "Replacing the bridge decks will extend the life of the bridges ensuring we get the best value of this work," said Haeffner. With almost 35 bridge projects scheduled this year in northeast Missouri, MoDOT has created web pages that will provide updated information about these projects and subsequent road closures. The web pages, found at www.modot.org/northeast under 2014 Bridge projects in Northeast Missouri at http://www.modot.org/northeast/2014NEBridgeProjects.htm are easy to navigate and provide as many details about possible on the bridges that will be rehabilitated or replaced this year. All roadwork is posted on the traveler information map.
