Public Invited to Help Get Ready for a New Bridge

HANNIBAL - The kickoff of the environmental assessment process for a new Champ Clark Bridge on U.S. 54 across the Mississippi River at Louisiana has begun, and MoDOT is seeking public input. The first open-house public meeting about this process will be held on Thursday, November 8 from 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the Twin Pikes YMCA in Louisiana. "The purpose of the environmental assessment process is to help determine the location for a new bridge," explained MoDOT Project Manager Keith Killen. Displays will be available at the public meeting, and Killen encourages everyone to share their comments.

In addition to the public meeting, MoDOT has created a citizen's advisory group, made up of business leaders, elected officials, historians and regional residents to help engage the public. "We have a really good group of folks who have already contributed to the process, even though it is early," Killen said. Because it is sometimes challenging for people to get to traditional public meetings, MoDOT has created www.champclarkbridge.com as an online tool for hearing ideas from the public. "This is another way we can provide access to people and help get ideas from them," Killen said.

"MoDOT is working with the Illinois Department of Transportation in this process, and while a new bridge is not funded for construction, we want to be ready should funding become available," Killen explained. Killen and his team of environmental experts and other engineers are working with regulatory agencies such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Federal Highway Administration, and the Department of Natural Resources to comply with the National Environmental Policy Act as part of the process.

All displays and maps will be available online, and the public is encouraged to view these and submit comments online as well. These can be accessed through MoDOT's website at www.modot.org/northeast. For more information, contact MoDOT customer service at 1-888-275-6636 or email customerservice3@modot.mo.gov.
