HANNIBAL - Motorists traveling on Business Route 61, P and 16 in Canton should prepare to slow down. MoDOT will lower the speed limit from 35 mph to 25 mph through most residential areas throughout Canton.
Installation of the new speed limit signs will be schedule in May, weather permitting. Motorists should be alert for the change in the speed limit signs and lower their speed accordingly when the new signs are installed. The change is being made after MoDOT conducted a speed limit study and determined it was time to make a change. The 25 mph speed limit will be extended two city blocks on Route P from West Drive west to the US61 east outer road and MO16 from 6th Street west to 8th Street. The speed limit will also be lowered to 25 mph on north Business Route 61 from White Street or MO 16 north two blocks to Henderson Street and on south Business Route 61 from Montgomery Street south three blocks to Marion Street which will include the area near the city park.
MoDOT approved the request for the speed limit change after conducting traffic and speed studies in Canton. "The safety improvement will improve safety through the residential areas," advised MoDOT Traffic Operations Engineer Brian Untiedt.
MoDOT wants to thank motorists for their patience and understanding during this time. If you have questions about this project, please call MoDOT toll-free customer service number at 1-888 ASK MODOT (275-6636) during normal business hours.
