Fifty-eight Bridges Replaced or Repaired In 2011
"Cut ? run" ribbon cutting signifies fast work - watch the "fun" video on YouTube!

HANNIBAL - One thing everyone likes about winter is the end of most highway work zones, and in northeast Missouri many projects have wrapped up for the winter. This holds true for the Safe and Sound Bridge Program, which allowed MoDOT to replace or repair 58 bridges all over northeast Missouri.  The final bridge was opened on November 30 in Ralls County on Route F over Spencer Creek.  "This also was the last bridge to be completed for Ralls County under the Safe & Sound Bridge Program," said MoDOT Area Engineer Brian Haeffner.  To celebrate the conclusion of the program in Ralls County and the quickness with which these bridges were constructed, a "cut ‘n run" ribbon cutting was held on the bridge.  A photo is attached and a YouTube video to capture the unique event is available at http://www.youtube.com/user/d3modot?feature=watch

Those participating in the event were Ray Bozarth with US Senator Roy Blunt, Lydia Shumake on behalf of her husband, Representative Lindell Shumake, Ralls County Presiding Commissioner Bob See and Western District County Commissioner Steve Whitaker, Steve Kullman, Alex Burnetti, and Chris Englebretson from KTU Contractors, and representing MoDOT were Butch Mundle and Brian Haeffner.  Also attending was local resident Linda.....  Representative Shumake, although not in attendance, expressed his congratulations to MoDOT, and wrote he uses this bridge frequently.  He also wrote he appreciates MoDOT's proactive approach to bridge safety in our region.

During the 2011 construction season approximately 45 bridges have been replaced and 13 rehabilitated. Next year, 24 Safe & Sound bridges will be replaced in Northeast Missouri.  "Some of these bridges could begin as early as February 2012," said Macy Rodenbaugh, who is the MoDOT field engineer for the Safe and Sound bridge program in Northeast Missouri. Statewide the Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program will improve 802 of Missouri's bridges by the end of 2013. The $685 million program is nearly three fourths complete and on track to finish more than a year ahead of schedule.

The Safe & Sound bridges are closed during construction and improvements are limited to just the bridge itself. To date, the average closure across the state has been about 40 days, or half the time a typical bridge replacement requires. MoDOT and its contractor, KTU Constructors, opened the new bridge at the Cuivre River on U.S. 54 just south of Laddonia after being closed for just 26 days. "The contractors and MoDOT inspectors should be commended for working to get so many of these bridges open so quickly," added Rodenbaugh. "This program is about getting bridges done fast, and the contractor has done this," explained Rodenbaugh.

The Safe and Sound Bridge Program is found on MoDOT's web site at www.modot.mo.gov/northeast, and features "before and after" photos of the completed bridges, as well as a listing of those bridges still to be repaired or replaced next year.
