Public Invited to Explore Highway 79....A Colorful Adventure
Ribbon cutting ceremony celebrates the arts

HANNIBAL -  The communities of Hannibal, Louisiana and Clarksville have worked with MoDOT to present "Explore Highway 79....A Colorful Adventure!," a ribbon cutting celebration on Thursday, October 20 at sunset, 5:30 p.m., just south of Ashburn on the newly built highway.  The keynote speaker will be Katie Steele-Danner, Director of the Missouri Division of Tourism.

"The element of art and nature certainly compliments the beauty of Highway 79," said Marisa Brown-Ellison, customer relations manager for MoDOT.  "The communities have created a beautiful event that will feature a variety of artists from all three areas," she added.   In addition, a representative from the Ashburn Betterment Committee will be represented, as will each of the mayors from Hannibal, Louisiana and Clarksville.  The 50 Miles of Art event, which focused on these three communities, will be held the first weekend of November, and it will be the first time in two years attendees of this event will be able to travel the entire Highway 79.

Presentations of art will be given to MoDOT to be displayed in the district office in Hannibal.  The ceremony will also feature music, a live eagle and those attending will receive a commemorative "piece" of the old Highway 79.

The ceremony will be held on the south end of the new piece of highway, and MoDOT will provide traffic control for participants to come from both the south and north ends of Highway 79.  In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held at the Ted Shanks Conservation building in Ashburn.
