Changes Coming to US 61 Through Palmyra

HANNIBAL - Since March, MoDOT has been working with a Citizen's Advisory Committee to incorporate a variety of suggestions provided from public input into an immediate solution to improve US 61 through Palmyra.

In a presentation to the Palmyra City Council on Thursday, May 19, MoDOT's Northeast District Engineer Paula Gough provided the final recommendations proposed by the committee for improvements. "These improvements are similar to those originally proposed at the public meeting in February, yet we incorporated changes based on the feedback from the Citizen's Advisory Committee and public input," Gough said.  The most significant change to the plan is allowing a left turn going northbound out of Main Cross onto US 61.  "It also includes making no changes at Leeser Road, creating a better right turn onto Thompson, widening and additional pavement markings on the acceleration and deceleration lanes along US 61," she added.

These improvements are scheduled to be awarded in late summer 2011, and Gough expects construction to be completed before the end of this year.

"We look forward to continuing to work with Mayor Graham and the Palmyra community on their long-range planning efforts," Gough added.  "We appreciate the time and efforts of the Citizen Advisory Committee, as well the input provided by the public and local officials," she said.

The details of the improvements are online at modot.org/northeast.  More information about this project and other transportation issues can also be found online or obtained by calling MoDOT's customer service center at 1-888-275-6636.  Internet users are encouraged to sign up for MoDOT's e-update service to receive information about road work in their respective areas.
