MoDOT and City of Palmyra to Form Advisory Committee

HANNIBAL -  With nearly five dozen comments from the public to address improving US 61 through Palmyra, MoDOT has asked the City to help form a citizen's advisory group to reconcile the feedback with the recommendations it has made. "There are a variety of suggestions provided us through the public input process, and we would like to pull together a group of at-large citizens to look at this feedback and determine how we can incorporate some of the suggestions into the immediate solution to improve US 61 through Palmyra," said MoDOT Northeast District Engineer Paula Gough.

According to Gough, the Mayor of Palmyra will select five or six people to represent the entire community, and MoDOT will select five or six people who have experience in balancing safety and access issues.  "MoDOT will be represented on the committee, but more than likely this person will not be from this area," she stated.  MoDOT has agreed to obtain a neutral facilitator with no vested interest in the issue.

"We want the citizens of Palmyra to know we are listening," Gough said.  "We've had overwhelming support to do something, and then there are a lot of suggestions, so we still have our work cut out for us," she added.  Gough said the City of Palmyra has a separate group working on a more long-term solution, such as an outer road system. "We need to keep the two solutions separate, yet our immediate solution will need to be a complement to the long-term solution," she explained.  "This is why we are extending our time frame on the immediate solution to make a decision by mid-April," she said.  The City's long-range planning committee is expected to provide recommendations to MoDOT by April 1.

The first citizens advisory committee meeting will be within the next few weeks, although a definite date has not been set.  Gough said she hopes it will only be necessary to have two or three meetings. "We want to make improvements during this upcoming construction season," she said.  "We don't expect to make everyone happy with the outcome, but we do expect it to be safer and continue to allow Palmyra to be a thriving community," she concluded.
