Public Invited to Learn More About Road Closures for Bridge Projects

HANNIBAL - Over the next few years, MoDOT is working to improve bridges on many of its minor roads, and Route 79 just south of Clarksville is one of the first to be worked on. "We are tentatively planning to close Route 79 at the Small Creek bridge around the first part of March, and it should reopen within 35 days based upon the current schedule," said MoDOT's Northeast District Construction and Materials Engineer Macy Rodenbaugh.  Traffic will be detoured on Routes H and W.  He said Route H at Little Ramsey Creek, between Eolia and Paynesvill also will be closed later this spring for bridge replacements and repairs. In order for the public to learn more about these bridge projects and others in the area, MoDOT will be available at the Clopton High School varsity basketball games on Friday, January 21 between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

"We will have more information available at the display, and everything we know right now is posted on our web pages at modot.org/northeast," Rodenbaugh explained. He said there would be several notices through media, schools, email and message boards alerting the public of the closure. "We have met with Pike County commissioners to explain more details and to answer questions about the Safe and Sound Bridge Program as there will be seven bridges in Pike County replaced or rehabilitated in 2011," he said. After that meeting, he said the public would start getting the notifications.

The bridge is being replaced under MoDOT's Safe and Sound Bridge Program, which will improve 802 bridges across the state. Northeast Missouri has about 80 bridges on the program, and 16 are already completed. "Most of these bridges are on smaller roads with low traffic volume, and the closure is short, yet we know it will be inconvenient to some," Rodenbaugh continued.

MoDOT encourages those interested in this project and others to go to the website for more details or call the customer service center toll-free at 1-888-275-6636.
