MoDOT Planning to Make Changes Along US 61 in Palmyra

HANNIBAL - It's been a number of years since MoDOT made improvements to the median crossovers along US 61 through Palmyra, and transportation officials are revisiting the area to look at improvements that will benefit all the traveling public.

MoDOT has met with area officials to let them know changes are coming. "We are in the process of defining our course of action that involves a solution," said Paula Gough, MoDOT's Northeast District engineer. Included in this process is gathering more data for a potential solution. Gough said a safety audit was recently performed by several representatives from MoDOT and law enforcement. "The purpose of a safety audit is to identify what elements of the road and intersections may present a safety concern and what opportunities exist to eliminate or mitigate those safety concerns," she explained. "We are in the process of analyzing this information and expect to have a plan to present to the public this winter," she said.

"We have heard suggestions and concerns from many people, and all will be taken into consideration; we have a responsibility to all the traveling public, and that is our primary focus," she stated.

Gough said MoDOT will keep officials and area residents informed through media and mass mailings.
