Stowell School Cave exploration complete

HANNIBAL – The exploration and mapping of Stowell School Cave is completed.  MoDOT announced at a press conference Wednesday afternoon that no signs of the missing boys were discovered, but the cave did offer some interesting features.

Three entrances were found, but in the end, two of those entrances went to the same cave and the third proved to be more of a pocket and not a cave.

Alan Leary, Senior Environmental Specialist with MoDOT, led the exhibition which included Jim Kaufmann, cave ecologist with the Missouri Department of Conservation, Jeffrey Crews, president of the Missouri Speleological Society, and Rita Worden, a paramedic with the University of Missouri-Columbia.  All three are experienced cavers and were delighted to have the opportunity to map a new discovery in northeast Missouri.

A total of three arrows were found in the cave, typical symbols of cavers more than four decades ago.  Calcite formations, large and small, were also found.  Pictures of the cave are online at www.modot.org.  The cavers also retrieved a cave cricket and a pill bug from the cave.

“We know the community was hoping for something more, yet our primary purpose was to map the cave, and this is complete,” said Dave Silvester, assistant district engineer for MoDOT.  The cave entrances have been covered so that the construction of the new Fulton Street and the school can continue.

“We appreciate the cooperation of the City, Bleigh Construction, and the school,” Silvester said.  He also expressed appreciation of the media and the public.
