Improvements on US 61 Through Palmyra Delayed

HANNIBAL - Motorists on US 61 through Palmyra won't see any improvements made this year, despite the most recent push to get the project approved on MoDOT's five-year program. "We only had one contractor bid on the project, and it was significantly higher than our estimated cost," said MoDOT Transportation Project Manager Chris Knapp. The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission rejected the bid of $1.5 million.

Earlier this spring, MoDOT and the City of Palmyra agreed to form a citizen's advisory committee to re-evaluate the improvements. "This was a good partnership that greatly influenced the final design, but it took time, and we solicited bids later in the year than we originally planned," Knapp added.

"We had a tight time frame for the project, because we wanted to get it done this year, yet contractors are busy this time of the year, and it would have been a challenge for them to complete the project without being assessed penalties," Knapp explained. Knapp said he expects better results by rebidding the project later this year, for the work to be done next year.

Improvements along US 61 through Palmyra will be made at the intersections of Main Cross Street, Ross Street, and Thompson Street. Displays showing the details of the improvements can be found online at www.modot.org/northeast.

MoDOT will keep the public informed as to the progress of the project.
