Ribbon Cutting Held on Route W South of Paynesville for New Bridge

HANNIBAL - Several dignitaries attended the first ribbon cutting held in Pike County for the completion of one of MoDOT's Safe & Sound Bridges - the one over Guinns Creek on Route W just south of Paynesville. Attending the ceremony (pictured left to right in the attachment) were MoDOT Assistant District Engineer Dave Silvester, MoDOT Area Engineer Ervin Fackler, US Senator Blunt representative Ray Bozarth, State Representative Jay Houghton, Pike County Commissioners Roy Sisson and Dan Miller, MoDOT Inspector Tom Owen (cutting the ribbon), Bleigh Construction Foreman Tim Murphy, Pike County Commissioner Curt Mitchell, area resident Tom Lewis (who provided us much of the history below), and the mayor of Paynesville, Joanne Hammock.

The old bridge was built in 1962 near Smith's Mill, and the houses on the county road near Guinns Creek are called the community of Sledd. The new bridge was completed in just 49 days and is now a two-lane bridge. Each of those attending the ceremony expressed appreciation for the new bridge, and Tom Lewis said he was thankful the bridge was now two lanes since he owns farm land on either side of the bridge. There are four bridges this year to be completed in Pike County on the Safe & Sound Bridge Program, and four next year.
