Project Overview – Hannibal Expressway

The Hannibal Expressway is an unfunded project which consists of constructing a four-lane divided highway to the south and west of Hannibal in Marion and Ralls Counties, approximately 10 miles in length.
Purpose
The Hannibal Expressway is part of the overall effort to improve the 520-mile “Avenue of the Saints” route so it will be free flowing with no stop signs or traffic signals from St. Paul, Minnesota to downtown St. Louis. In addition, it will reduce congestion through Hannibal, improving the safety, efficiency, and convenience of the area’s road system.
Need
-
Seven signalized intersections on Route 61 through Hannibal slow traffic.
-
Completion of the four-lane Avenue of the Saints (Summer 2008) and Route 36 (Winter 2009) will spur traffic growth through Hannibal.
-
High driveway and intersection density through Hannibal increases accident potential and slows traffic flow.
-
Hannibal School District traffic generates along the east side of Route 61 through Hannibal.
-
Heavy retail and restaurant traffic generates along the west side of Route 61 through Hannibal.
Funding
Although this project is not currently funded in our five-year program, it remains to be one of the top priorities in the Northeast District. This is one of many unfunded transportation needs around the state of Missouri.
