MACON - Weather permitting, beginning Monday, June 16, Route H near Worthington will be closed to traffic for up to 45 calendar days for bridge rehabilitation at the Elm Creek Bridge, which is 0.70 mile north of Route W near Worthington. Road closure signs will be in place notifying motorists of the work. Motorists will need to use alternate routes during this time. Some areas of the road will remain open to local traffic only; all other traffic must take alternate routes. Chester Bross Construction Company of Hannibal, Missouri was awarded the contract at $235,867.Replacing the deck on the bridge requires removal of the concrete deck and side barriers all the way down to steel. This is followed by cleaning and replacing some of the steel, and pouring concrete for the new deck which will be 22 feet wide compared to the existing width of 20 feet. "Once the concrete is poured, it must cure, which is the most critical period during the work, when concrete reaches its maximum strength and durability," explains Amy Crawford, area engineer for MoDOT's Northeast District. "Replacing the bridge decks will extend the life of the bridges ensuring we get the best value of this work," said Crawford. With almost 35 bridge projects scheduled this year in northeast Missouri, MoDOT has created web pages that will provide updated information about these projects and subsequent road closures. The web pages, found at www.modot.org/northeast under 2014 Bridge projects in Northeast Missouri at http://www.modot.org/northeast/2014NEBridgeProjects.htm are easy to navigate and provide as many details about possible on the bridges that will be rehabilitated or replaced this year.
