MoDOT to close northbound Interstate 55 next weekend

ST. LOUIS – Drivers who use northbound I-55 in the city of St. Louis should be aware of two upcoming closures on the interstate next week – one overnight closure and one weekend closure.

The closures will allow crews to construct a place where traffic can cross to the northbound lanes between the River Des Peres and Koeln. This crossover work will allow crews to work on rehabilitating the southbound River Des Peres bridge.

Crews will close northbound I-55 at Carondelet/River City Boulevard (Exit 202A) Thursday, February 29, starting at 10 p.m.  Traffic will turn right on River City Boulevard, follow it to Broadway and turn left on Broadway and follow it back to the interstate.  Two northbound lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Friday, March 1.

Crews will again close northbound I-55 at Carondelet/River City Boulevard (Exit 202A) Friday, March 1, starting at 9 p.m. for the weekend. Traffic will use the same detour route of River City Boulevard and Broadway to return to the interstate. In addition, crews will close one southbound lane (leaving only one lane open) Saturday, March 2 between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. The two northbound lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, March 4. Drivers should be aware of a new traffic pattern on both northbound and southbound I-55 after the lanes reopen, as both lanes of traffic will move onto the northbound side of I-55 and back to the southbound side between River City Boulevard and Loughborough.

This traffic shift continues to work around the closed section of the northbound interstate at the Union Pacific Railroad bridge, just south of Loughborough Avenue. That section remains closed after damage to the steel support beams, known as girders, on the bridge.

Engineers are completing design work to replace the damaged girders on the northbound I-55 bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad.  The replacement girders should be delivered this fall. MoDOT is currently working through the necessary agreements with the railroad to install those girders over the track once they arrive.

Further information including updated timelines for construction on the project will be shared as soon as it becomes available.

The issues on the northbound Union Pacific Railroad bridge do not impact the work continuing on I-55 to the north and south of this area. Crews have completed work and reopened much of the roadway north of Virginia. Work on the southern portion near Green Park Road and Gravois Creek is still on schedule to be completed later this fall. Paving on I-55 from I-44 to Lindbergh is expected to start soon on the north side and continue paving through the corridor as the bridge work is completed. Paving work is expected to continue into 2026.
