Improvements to U.S. Route 54 in Jefferson City to start in March

Multiple projects along busy corridor to begin with bridge work, eastbound expansion

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Five projects aimed to enhance safety, ease congestion, and prolong the life expectancy of roads and bridges along the busy U.S. Route 54 corridor in Jefferson City are planned in 2024, with three of these improvement projects set to begin in March. These three projects span from the U.S. Route 63 interchange in North Jefferson City to the south end of the Senator Roy Blunt Bridge (Missouri River Bridge).

Details about each of the three projects are listed below, including anticipated initial traffic impacts. For the duration of these projects, all lanes on U.S. Route 54 will be open during daytime hours, 6 a.m. - 7 p.m. As the projects progress there will be lane, ramp, and bridge closures along with lane width restrictions and reduced speeds

Anticipated start dates and initial traffic impacts:

Bridge rehabilitation on U.S. Route 63/Missouri Route 94 and Route W, both over U.S. Route 54

  • Starts March 4.
  • Crews will begin with work under the bridges with minimal traffic impacts expected.
  • Later phases will require bridge closures and detours.

Missouri River Bridge washing

  • Starts March 7.
  • Most work will occur during overnight hours, with all lanes open during peak travel times.

Widening eastbound U.S. Route 54 from U.S. Route 63 to the Missouri River Bridge

  • Starts March 11.
  • First phase of adding an additional lane of travel will begin with work to the right shoulder.
  • All lanes will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., though width restrictions will be in place. Any necessary lane closures will take place during overnight hours.

All work is weather-permitting, and schedules are subject to change.

The two other improvement projects have not been scheduled, but are expected to begin in 2024. The contractors for all the improvements will coordinate work in order to minimize impacts to the traveling public.
