Lieutenant Governor Honors Team Spirit Youth

JEFFERSON CITY - Youth leadership teams from around the state will be in Jefferson City on March 27 and 28 for a Team Spirit Reunion. The two-day reunion includes workshops and presentations about traffic safety. Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder will recognize the contributions of the youth teams by presenting each team with a proclamation for their efforts in promoting safe habits among the youth in their communities. The proclamation ceremony will take place Tuesday, March 28 from 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in the Governor's Garden east of the Capitol.

Team Spirit is a statewide program, sponsored by the Missouri Department of Transportation's Highway Safety Division, which is committed to developing natural leadership skills in teens. The program challenges students to explore knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to driving habits among their peers. After an initial training session, Team Spirit youth create and implement specific action plans to address traffic safety issues and to promote prevention and positive alternative activities in their schools. The 2-day Reunion provided the teams with the opportunity to share ideas with other teams and gain knowledge.

"Nearly 600 young people died in traffic crashes in Missouri over the last three years," said Pete Rahn, director for MoDOT. "Team Spirit gives these students the skills to impact their peers in a very positive way."

Team Spirit is available to all communities in Missouri. For more information about how your school can become involved in this program call 1-800-800-BELT (2358).

In case of inclement weather, the proclamation ceremony will be held at the Ramada Inn, 1510 Jefferson Street, Jefferson City, Missouri in the Hermitage Hall.

Note - The following high schools will receive a proclamation at the ceremony on March 28:   Center, Excelsior Springs, Fair Grove, Farmington, Hannibal, Iberia R-V, La Monte R-IV, Lesterville R-IV, Lincoln R-II, Lindbergh, Macon County, Naylor, Blair Oaks, Raymore-Peculiar High School, and Raymore-Peculiar Freshman Center.
