With Help from Amendment 3,

About 800 Road Projects Planned in Next Five Years

JEFFERSON CITY - Missouri's proposed five-year transportation improvement program is now available for public review.   The Missouri Department of Transportation's construction program lists all transportation projects planned by state and regional planning agencies for fiscal years 2006 through 2010 (July 1, 2005 - June 30, 2010).

In November 2004, Missouri voters provided more than $1.7 billion in transportation dollars to MoDOT through Amendment 3, making many additional improvements possible.   When added to existing funding commitments for roads, bridges and other transportation modes, the construction program totals $7.2 billion - the largest five-year project list in state history.

"This is a great day for transportation in Missouri," said MoDOT Director Pete Rahn.   "Barely six months ago, the public approved Amendment 3.   Now, just a short time later, we're putting that money to work with hundreds of new projects planned."

The department's customer service centers at 1-888 ASK MODOT (275-6636) are available to help citizens interested in seeing the program or offering comments.   Beginning May 11, the program will also be available on MoDOT's web site - www.modot.org - and at the department's district offices around the state.   The formal public comment period ends June 27.

"We are very interested in the public's input," Rahn said.    "The transportation improvement program is an essential part of MoDOT's communication with customers to let them know their investment is being spent on the most important transportation projects."

Currently, 47 percent of the state's major highways are in good or better condition.   The additional funding will allow that percentage to increase to 75 percent by the end of the program.   Seventy-one percent of the state highway bridges are currently in good or better condition, and by the end of the 2006-2010 transportation program, 75 to 80 percent of the bridges will be in good or better condition.

Following public review, the comments will be presented to the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission.   The commission will review the comments and the transportation program before considering it for approval July 8.

With the help of Amendment 3 funding, MoDOT plans to complete about 800 projects in the next five years, including the following.

  • Improvements to Route 61 in Northeast Missouri, completing corridor from Iowa to St. Louis
