Columbia Bridge Work to Close I-70 at Night
One Lane in Each Direction Will Be Open; Speed Limit Will Be Lowered

COLUMBIA, Mo.  – Work on the project to replace the Interstate 70 bridges at Rangeline Street, Business Loop 70 and Garth Avenue will close one lane of I-70 in each direction overnight Tuesday through Friday, Oct. 20-23, and from Monday through Wednesday, Oct. 26-28. The lanes will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., but will re-open each day for daytime travel. No lanes will be closed over the Oct. 24-25 weekend.

The left eastbound and westbound lanes, also referred to as the passing lanes, will be closed from just east of Rangeline to just west of Garth Avenue during the off-peak travel hours. The right eastbound and westbound lanes will remain open at all times.

Closing the lanes will allow the contractor on the project, Emery Sapp and Sons, to safely remove the existing median barriers and replace them with temporary barriers. The temporary barriers will facilitate future shifts in traffic and demolition and construction of the new bridges.

In addition, the contractor will close the right westbound lane of I-70, also known as the driving lane, from just west of Garth Avenue to just west of Business Loop 70 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Oct. 20 and 21. The closure will allow construction crews to place temporary barriers along the right interstate shoulder to prepare for building the new I-70 bridge at Business Loop 70.

The speed limit on I-70 through the work zone will be reduced from 60 mph to 50 mph during the closures. Message boards will notify motorists of the lane closures and lower speed limit.

“Closing these lanes will ensure the safety of both the workers and those driving through the area,” said Travis Koestner, assistant district engineer for the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Central District. “We’re performing the work at night and also opening the lanes back up for weekend travel in an effort to minimize traffic disruptions.”

The $18 million design-build project, which also includes building new roundabouts on the north and south sides of I-70 at the Business Loop 70/West Boulevard interchange and at Rangeline, is scheduled to be completed by Oct. 1, 2016.
