Projects inside the St. Louis, Kansas City and Springfield metropolitan areas will be selected through a separate competitive process.

The Transportation Alternative Program provides federal funds through a competitive selection process for transportation-related activities and cannot be used for routine highway and bridge construction. The projects can be stand-alone, or part of an ongoing transportation project. These projects can include, but are not limited to:

  • Pedestrian/bike facilities and infrastructure
  • Rails to trails
  • Scenic turnouts and overlooks
  • Storm water mitigation
  • Wildlife management
  • Outdoor advertising management
  • Vegetative management
  • Rehabilitation of historic transportation facilities
  • Archaeological activities
  • Recreational Trails Program
  • Safe Routes to School activities
  • Boulevards from divided highways

Local public agencies are reimbursed for eligible project costs at a rate of 80 percent with the local agency providing a 20 percent match. Eligible projects must be able to begin construction on or before spring 2016.

Applications are due November 14, 2014, with selected projects to be announced in January 2015.
