JEFFERSON CITY - To help ensure your travels are as carefree as possible, the Missouri Department of Transportation has developed a list of significant work zones to be on the lookout for this summer.
Although MoDOT's construction budget is about half what it was a year ago, drivers will still encounter significant work zones as MoDOT and its contractors work to preserve the state transportation system in the best fashion possible with the resources available.
The list provides information on how the work zones will affect travel and for how long. Information on work zones statewide is available up to a week in advance on the department's Traveler Information Map located at www.modot.org or by calling toll-free 888-ASK-MoDOT. While most work zones will not be active over the Memorial Day weekend, it may be necessary for lane closures to remain in place.
Besides these highway improvements, more than 90 bridges are scheduled for work this year to complete the department's Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program. In almost all cases, the bridges will be closed during construction to lower the cost and allow for speedy completion. A map showing bridge construction schedules and available detours can be found at http://safeandsoundmap.modot.mo.gov/flex/SafeAndSound.html. The Safe & Sound Program will have replaced or rehabilitated more than 800 of Missouri's poorest bridges by the time the program draws to a close in the fall - more than a year ahead of schedule.
Motorists are asked to rate MoDOT's work zones by visiting the department's website - www.modot.org - and clicking on the "Rate Our Work Zones" button.
Selected Major Work Zones for 2012
Cole County, Jefferson City, US Route 54 intersection improvements
Work is under way to improve several intersections on US 54 in Cole County from Route CC south of Jefferson City to Hickory Hill/Clark Fork Road. The daytime work will involve periodic lane drops, and motorists should expect some delays during peak travel times. The project includes a variety of safety improvements, including acceleration and deceleration lanes, offset turn lanes, lighting and other lane modifications. The improvements are scheduled for completion by fall of 2012.
KANSAS CITY DISTRICT
Clay and Jackson Counties, Route 169/Broadway Extension ‘bin wall' replacement
There will be no southbound access across the Broadway Bridge (a major river crossing) from The Northland (Clay County) to Downtown Kansas City (Jackson County). Northbound traffic may cross the bridge, but can go no farther than the Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport. Alternate river crossings include the Heart of America (Route 9) and Christopher S. Bond (I-29/35) Bridges. Construction is scheduled to begin following the July 10 MLB All-Star Game and conclude before the end of the year.
Jackson County, Route 150 at Botts/Thunderbird
Ongoing interchange construction will reduce this busy highway to one lane in each direction starting after Memorial Day weekend and last up to two weeks.
Cass County, Route 71 bridge at Routes C& J in Peculiar
Bridge that joins eastern and western portions of town will be closed for major reconstruction staring July 5. The bridge will re-open prior to the start of school in August.
Buchanan County, Interstate 29 from Route O to Platte County line
Resurfacing of 8.4 miles. Significant backups could occur, although efforts will be made to perform work during off-peak traffic hours.
Marion County, US Route 61 in Palmyra
US 61 intersection improvements through Palmyra at Ross, Main Cross and Thompson Streets. Safety improvements including construction of offset turn lanes, acceleration and deceleration lanes, along with other improvements.
Lincoln County, US Route 61/South Lincoln Drive in Troy
Construction of a new interchange at this location will be a major work zone under heavy traffic.
ST. LOUIS DISTRICT
City of St. Louis, I-64 Double-Deck Rehabilitation Work
Major work to remove and replace the driving surface on the double-deck portion of I-64 and to replace deteriorated expansion joints. Project will have significant traffic impacts until the end of the year, requiring permanent lane closures on the bridge and several weekend interstate closures throughout 2012. Also, the ramp from Broadway to westbound I-64 is closed until October.
St. Louis County, Interstate 270 between Route 100 (Manchester) and Interstate 44
A two-year project is underway to widen this section of I-270. Work includes widening work, roadway construction, work in the rock bluffs and installing soundwalls. MoDOT will narrow and shift the existing four lanes from Manchester to I-44 in the project, so motorists will have no shoulders in some locations as crews widen the road.
St. Charles County, I-70 Blanchette Bridge over the Missouri River
The $63 million rehabilitation of the westbound Blanchette Bridge will close and detour traffic starting late fall 2012. Plans call for closure of the bridge in late fall with a shift of lanes to the eastbound bridge. Additionally overnight and weekend closures will happen this summer at the Earth City Expressway interchange and at the bridge.
Ste. Genevieve, Perry, Cape Girardeau and Scott Counties - Interstate 55 improvements
Work to improve the north and southbound lanes of Interstate 55 is underway. The first project includes resurfacing the southbound lanes of I-55 from Route 51 in Perryville to US 61 in Fruitland, and from Route 74 in Cape Girardeau to Route 77 near the Benton Exit. The project also includes resurfacing the northbound lanes from Route 77 near the Benton Exit to Route 74 in Cape Girardeau. Work to improve the north and southbound lanes of I-55 in Ste. Genevieve County is also underway. The project includes resurfacing and undersealing over 40 miles of the north and southbound lanes from the Jefferson County line to Route J/N (Exit 143). Median guard cable will be installed from Route 67 near Crystal City to Route E near Oak Ridge. During work, traffic will be reduced to one lane, with work in Cape Girardeau and Scott City areas completed during the nighttime hours. Completion is anticipated by Fall 2012.
