Students Save 15% When Traveling on Amtrak
Recent Study Shows Students Enjoy Ease of Travel by Amtrak

April 28, 2016 – For immediate release

JEFFERSON CITY – College students across Missouri are completing semester projects, studying for finals and preparing for graduation ceremonies. With the end of the school year, students can choose Amtrak as an inexpensive option to travel home when school ends the first two weeks of May.

With the Amtrak Student Discount, students 17-25 can travel for 15 percent off the lowest Value Rail Fare and Flexible Rail Fare year-round on all routes. Valid student identification is required to receive the discount. Missouri’s Amtrak Missouri River Runner between St. Louis and Kansas City includes stops at Kirkwood, Washington, Hermann, Jefferson City, Sedalia, Warrensburg, Lee’s Summit and Independence.

A recent study, which was conducted by the University Partnerships Committee of the Midwest Interstate Passenger Rail Commission (MIPRC) from Nov. 2015 to Feb. 2016, surveyed 19,194 members of 30 universities across nine states. Three Missouri universities, including the University of Central Missouri, Fontbonne University and Truman State University, were participants in the study. The survey’s purpose was to gauge the current attitudes and knowledge college students and employees have about Midwestern Amtrak, as well as to highlight areas of improvement that can be made to the intercity rail system in the future.

“The MIPRC survey showed that many students in the region rely on train travel to commute to and from their schools,” said Missouri Senator David Pearce, R-Warrensburg, and member of MIPRC Commission. “It also illuminated a need for growth among students who could benefit from intercity rail service but might not be informed enough to know.” For more information, visit the Commission’s website at miprc.org.

When riding Amtrak, passengers enjoy free Wi-Fi on many routes, outlets to keep computers and phones charged as well as a generous baggage allowance of up to two carry-on bags and two checked bags where checked baggage is available.

Terms and conditions for purchasing the Amtrak Student Discount are displayed on Amtrak.com. The offer is valid for coach seats and is dependent upon availability.
